The 5 Most-visited Holy Places in the Holy Land

The 5 Most-visited Holy Places in the Holy Land

The historical land of Israel is home to countless Holy Places that are sacred for Christians the world over. For thousands of years, Christians have been visiting Israel to offer a prayer request to seek divine and spiritual enrichment the Lord in some truly historic and important locations.

Every year, hundreds and thousands of visitors throng the myriad sacred sites that can be found all over Israel. Here, we look at some of the most visited Holy Places in the Holy Land.

The Holy Sepulchre Entrance

Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Not only is this site one of the most-visited of Holy Places, but it is also perhaps the holiest one for Christians all over the world. The Church Of The Holy Sepulchre, after all, is the place where Jesus was crucified, buried and resurrected.
You will find the ‘Stone of Anointing’ right at the entrance of the church. It is believed that this is where Jesus was consecrated before he was crucified. Inside the church, you will also get to see the Rock of Calvary – this is where the Crucifixion is believed to have taken place. It is enclosed within the Altar of the Crucifixion and is historically the most-visited area in the church.
For a long time now, the Church Of The Holy Sepulchre has been a pilgrim’s favorite for Christians. Located in the northwest quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem, the church opens at 5 am and sees a steady stream of visitors on a daily basis. As such, arriving early to offer your holy land prayer request is advisable

THE JESUS TRAIL

This is not just a site for those seeking the Holy Place: it can also be relished by Christian tourists who wish to indulge in some hiking.
The Jesus Trail has been recently created and stretches from Nazareth to culminate on the banks of the Sea of Galilee. Christian tourists who are interested in exploring more about the rich culture that prospers along the Galilee will really enjoy this hike.
The hike usually takes up 4 to 5 days and the spectacular Galilee landscape is certain to enthral you. You will also get to witness famous places mentioned in the New Testament, like Cana and Zippori. Many young pilgrimages strive to hike this trial during the spring. The weather is perfect, the land is green and the streams are full of water. In order to find camping sites along the trial, we reccomend to check out https://ifreecamp.com/– the best online guide for camping in Israel

CAPERNAUM

Famously called “The town of Jesus”, Capernaum is on the must-see locales list for countless Christian tourists.
Capernaum has found its name mentioned several times in the Bible as Jesus lived here for a while during his years of ministry. Capernaum is also the hometown of Jesus’ first apostles: the fishermen Peter, James and John, Andrew, and the tax collector Mathew. It is also here that Jesus is said to have performed several miracles, so it is no surprise that it is considered one of the most popular Holy Places in the Holy Land.
In Capernaum, you will find plenty of churches that honour the life of Jesus. Church of the House of St. Peter and Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Apostles are two of the most famous ones that one must visit here. You can rest assured that you will find the most peaceful environment for sending your prayer request here.

QASR EL YAHUD

Qasr el Yahud is important for Christians as it is the place where Jesus is considered to have been baptized by John the Baptist (Matthew, 3: 13-17). This is also the site where the Israelites crossed the Jordan into the land of Canaan. Located on the road to Jericho off Road 90, the place is considered holy by Christians and is often visited by those who want to revisit their spiritual roots.
After undergoing widespread renovations, the place is now open to the public. Here, you will get to see remains of ancient churches dating as far back as the 5th century. Another thing you should watch for here is the cross-shaped baptismal pool.
Be warned, though: Qasr el Yahud is one of the hottest places in Israel, so you will need to be fully hydrated before you reach here.
While the place isn’t as glamorous or spectacular as some of the other Holy Places mentioned above, people derive immense spiritual value and peace from this holy place.

nazareth

NAZARETH

Having a population of over 60,000, Nazareth is the largest Arab city in Israel. Jesus, along with his parents, spent a large part of his childhood in Nazareth after returning from Egypt, making it one of the most important Biblical places in the region.
There are several popular holy sites in Nazareth, and the Basilica of the Annunciation is perhaps the most well-known as it is the biggest Christian church building in the Middle East. The Church of St. Joseph is another sacred site in Nazareth which was built over a cave – considered to be the carpentry workshop of St. Joseph.
When in Nazareth, you must also visit Mary’s Well. While this is a public fountain, it is believed that the age-old well was fed by Mary’s Spring.

THERE ARE, OF COURSE, A NUMBER OF OTHER SITES OF RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE THAT YOU CAN VISIT IN THE HOLY LAND.

VISITING THESE HOLY PLACES OF ISRAEL IS AN IMPORTANT AND SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE FOR HORDES OF BELIEVERS AND DOUBTING THOMASES ALIKE!

The Holy Sepulchre and Church History

“And they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, The place of a skull,” (Matthew 27:33)

Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, known in the New Testament (Matt. 27:33–35; Mark 15:22–25; John 19:17–24) as “the place of the skull”. This location lay outside the perimeter of the city walls at the time and was an abandoned stone quarry.

Around a decade later, a wall was built which enclosed the site inside what we know today as Jerusalem’s Old City.

Stone of Anointing (Stone of Unction)

Stone of Anointing

Another point of interest inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the so-called Stone of Unction, which was the spot where Joseph of Arimathea prepared Jesus for Burial.

It is customary for pilgrims to kneel and kiss the stone on their arrival at this location within the church. This tradition stems from John 19:40:

“Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury”.

The kneeling action is also represented in the large mosaic above the Stone of Unction, which depicts subjects kneeling alongside the stone.

How was it discovered?

The tomb itself was discovered in the process of building a church ordered by Roman Emperor Constantine I. This then became the first Church of the Holy Sepulchre which could be accessed by a set of steps which rose from one of Jerusalem’s main streets.

Early pilgrims would have walked through a basilica and the ‘holy garden which contained ‘the rock of Golgotha, before reaching the Holy Sepulchre.

The Church starts to form around the Stone of Anointing

A small building was built around the tomb, which was originally exposed. The relic of the cross of Jesus, another important feature of the church, is said to have been discovered by Saint Helena, Constantine’s mother, in 326.

In the 11th century, the Chapel of the Invention of the Cross was founded, in a cave deep beneath the basilica’s ruins, which is still present today.

A number of destructions and restructurings have taken place at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, including a 614 ransacking by a Persian Army, a 966 fire which destroyed the dome in anti-Christian riots, and a complete dismantling by fanatical Arab leader Fatimid caliph al-Hakim in 1009.

After being rebuilt by Constantine IX Monomachus, the Byzantine emperor – after the first Crusade, ending in 1099, freed it up as a place of worship – it was reconsecrated 50 years later to the day. While work has been carried out periodically over the years, the post-Crusade Church of the Holy Sepulchre is much like the one which stands today.

Today pilgrims often light a candle, make a prayer or take part in a procession around the site. The experience is very emotional for some, evocative for others, and gives Christians the chance to communicate with God and ask for what is in their hearts. For those who are far away, we are offering the pilgrims experience as an online option.

What do we know about resurrection?

What Do We Know About Resurrection?

When thinking about resurrection in Christianity, the first thing that comes to most of the believers’ minds are the events that happened in Jerusalem around 30-33 AD.

The Christian belief that Jesus will return and bring His followers back to life stems from extensive accounts,

  • found in the Four Gospels of the New Testament, about the resurrection of Christ that happened three days after His crucifixion and burial.
  • The gospels’ narratives of many incidents where Jesus appeared to over 500 people in the 40 days after His death
  • The events of nine other resurrections with eyewitness accounts.

The opponents say

Over the years, many theories have surfaced because of some inconsistencies in the accounts, such as beliefs that

  • – Jesus had only temporarily lost consciousness, or
  • – the Apostles had stolen His body from the grave, but these theories are easily disputed by the overwhelming abundance of matching events in the gospels, which assert the belief of Jesus being resurrected.

What that matter is…

In the end, despite the ongoing efforts of scientist and historians to find factual information, it’s not really a matter of proving or disproving the event, because it transcends these matters with its meaning.

Resurrection is not only a testament to God’s power over life and death but:

– A symbol of the unification of body and soul.

– An example of justice and salvation for those who had humbled themselves and followed God’s word.

Ultimately, it means the unification of Christ and His followers.

JESUS AND THE IMPORTANCE HE SAW IN RESURRECTION

JESUS AND THE IMPORTANCE HE SAW IN RESURRECTION

Jesus knew he had to be in Jerusalem, he knew he must be killed and resurrect. In this article, we will review the events.

Most of our knowledge about Jesus comes from the apostles and therefore we are bringing here the highlights.

Jesus is giving his disciples a detailed review of the upcoming events:

According to the book of Matthew:

“From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life”. (16:21)

After the crucifixion – Jesus was crucified and died at noon. Upon his death, an earthquake struck the area:

“And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city,” (27:52-53)

Joseph of Arimathea was keen to ensure that the corpse was buried according to the Jewish law, put the body in a new shroud and buried his body in the tomb just before sunset (27:57-60).

Women who followed Jesus had carried and prepared spices for anointing the body of Jesus Christ, and before they went to rest on the weekly Sabbath day, they made sure his tomb was sealed.

“And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulcher” (27:61)

The Resurrection

Then the body of Jesus Christ was in the tomb for three days and nights, and near sunset, he rose with the promise of bringing salvation to humankind.

The women that prepared the spices arrived early in the morning and found that Jesus had already risen,

“And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified” (28:5).

Jesus met his eleven disciples and sent them to us, to the world, with his promise

“I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen” (28:19)

With these last words, we have the legacy of Jesus regarding our Salvation and his all-time presence.

Cremation, how is it connected to the Holy Land?

Cremation, how is it connected to the Holy Land?

Cremation, how is it connected to the Holy Land

One of the main issues of humanity is related to land and, in the modern era, the lack of it. Real-estate is a pressing issue, especially in the urban areas around the world. As a result, more and more families are looking for new solutions and new traditions regarding their accommodation. But while we are looking for solutions for the living, we should also look for new spaces for the deceased, as well as new methods.

Traditions and solutions

In most of the Western countries, the most popular method is the burial. Some families are buried in mausoleums, which is a structure where there is room for coffins and personal belongings. It is also where generations of the same family can rest in peace together. Some families can’t afford these buildings and are buried in the same cemetery plots for generations. But as the world population is at its peak, burial becomes an issue. In some of the largest cemeteries, there are vacant spaces only for the next 40-50 years.

But why is burial the common solution? There are two apparent reasons:

The first one is the lack of other available options, and the second one is the Christian tradition and the change in the Catholic canon law.

Only in the late 19th century, a professor from Italy perfected the cremation model. Once this solution became available, it began to spread across Europe and North America. In the USA, by the beginning of the 20th century, there were around 20 crematories. By the end of the century, there were over 2,000 crematories.

Revised Canon Law

Even though cremation was available for Catholic Christians since the middle of the 20th century, its full regulations became clear only last year.

According to the new guidelines, the main concern is the memory of the deceased and keep him as part of the community. This concern is met at best with burial in a cemetery, and therefore other solutions, such as cremation or burial in private locations, are less common.

At the beginning of this article, we found out that burial has turned out to be an issue demanding of new solutions. With the revised canon law, cremation is a new solution that brings with it even further outcomes.

 New Traditions

As part of the growing movement of cremation, new traditions are rising. One of them is sending ashes to sacred places, such as the Holy Land. Officials in Israel are stating that this is a growing movement, which increases in popularity by thousands every year. Most of the families have no relatives in Israel, but a wish to be closer to Jesus and his legacy.

In Israel import and burial are allowed, this rule is in accordance with the Catholic canon law, which forbids scattering the ashes. Today, a family can have a local and personal ceremony, and afterward, send the Urn to the Holy Land to place it for its final rest in a sacred and secure place. Such a service is available in the Salvation Garden,

The Mystery of the Veil of Veronica

The Mystery of the Veil of Veronica

The Mystery of the Veil of Veronica

Saint Veronica – History and Background

Saint Veronica was a godly woman living in Jerusalem during the first century. According to church tradition, this pious woman encountered Jesus on the Via Dolorosa as Jesus carried the cross on the way to Mount Calvary for crucifixion.

Veronica was deeply moved by the suffering of Jesus. Looking at his bloodied and sweating face, she offered him her veil to wipe his face.

The Veil of Veronica features and Jesus’s image

When Jesus returned the veil to Veronica, she found His portrait imprinted on it.
The almost transparent, white veil measuring 6.5 by 9.5 inches bears the features of a bearded man with open eyes and long hair. From his facial expressions, he looks weary and there are marks of bruises and clotted blood on his face.

However, in spite of his sufferings, he still looks serene indicating a man who bears his pain with patience.

What did Veronica discover about the Veil?

According to the Catholic tradition, Veronica kept the veil and later discovered it had curative powers when she used it to cure Emperor Tiberius. Tradition holds that she entrusted it to Pope Clement and his successors where it has been kept under tight security in the Basilica of St. Peter.

The veil is brought out annually on Passion Sunday for 2 minutes and displayed to the congregation from the pillar of St. Veronica.

Who holds the original Veil?

The authenticity of the original veil and its location has been a subject of debate for years. According to Heinrich Pfeiffer, a Christian professor at Vatican’s Gregorian University, the original veil disappeared from the Vatican in 1608 but was recently discovered in a monastery in Manoppello.

Another cloth – Shroud of Turin

The veil of Veronica is not as famous as the Shroud of Turin which is said to be Christ’s burial cloth, but experts say that the images on both cloths seem to have been formed around the same time.

The Holy Face and the Sanctuary of Manoppello

Though the dispute about the veil is far from over, most believers accept it as the authentic sweat cloth Veronica gave to Jesus to wipe His face.
When Pope Benedict XVI visited Manoppello and prayed before the relic commonly known as the Holy Face, his visit was seen as a mark of approval for the veil in the sanctuary of Manoppello.

The sanctuary is visited by more than a million pilgrims and tourists annually and these numbers are likely to increase.

A Short one: On Jerusalem in the eye of Christianity

A Short one: On Jerusalem in the eye of Christianity

A Short one: On Jerusalem in the eye of Christianity

Jerusalem: the Holy City

According to Zechariah, the Lord promised to protect Jerusalem, to make it an ‘immovable rock for all the nations’ and to ‘shield those who live in Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them will be like David’.
This, coupled with Luke 24:47:’and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem’ has led Christians to believe that salvation of the Earth will begin in the Holy City.

Is it still a significant place?

Yes, Because of this belief, and because Christ died and was resurrected in the city, Jerusalem has become one of the most significant places on Earth for Christians.

Each year, millions of Christians make the pilgrimage to the empty prayer of Jesus at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in the city to pray. They are seeking solace and redemption in the process.

Many also wish to be buried there, as they believe that the Last Judgment will take place in Jerusalem.

The Stone of the Anointing

The Stone of the Anointing

The Stone of the Anointing

The Stone of the Anointing is also often called the Stone of Unction. It can be found just inside the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre contains the two most holy Christian sites in Jerusalem, Calvary where Jesus was crucified and the Stone of the Anointing where his body was prepared for burial by anointing and being wrapped in cloth.

Importance to Christians

The Stone of the Anointing is of enormous importance to Christians across the world as it was here that Mary Magdalene was the first person to see the newly risen Jesus. She didn’t realize it was him and thought she was speaking to a stranger when she said:

“They have taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where to find him.”

For Christians, this is the most important event in the history of mankind, as it is when death was conquered by Jesus and from that moment on his believers felt they too could defeat death and experience eternal life. The importance of this event is reflected in the importance of the Stone of the Anointing.

History

Most historians are in agreement that the Stone of the Anointing is the place where Jesus’ body was prepared for burial. Because of this, the stone itself and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre are very popular destinations for pilgrims and they have been the scenes of some difficult times throughout history.

The Roman Emperor Hadrian didn’t want a site of such significance to be available to Christians, so he built a temple to the goddess Venus over the holy site in the 2nd Century AD. Around 325 AD the Roman empire had its first Christian Emperor, Constantine the Great, who oversaw the replacement of the temple by a church.

In 630 AD this church was damaged by a Persian attack and a difficult history of earthquakes, fires and repairs followed.

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was totally reconstructed in 1810 and it was at this time that the current Stone of the Anointing was placed where Jesus’ body was prepared for burial.

What people do there today

The Stone of the Anointing remains a very holy pilgrimage site for Christians today. Pilgrims queue to either kiss the stone or rub it with oil or rosewater and then wipe it with a cloth. Priests burn incense around the stone and sometimes people place their own crosses on it in order to transfer the unction or anointing.

Rosewater

Rosewater is used to anoint the Stone of the Anointing because it is a perfume that has traditional use in a number of religions. For example, during Muslim burials rosewater is sprinkled into a grave before burial. Rosewater has in the past been used for the embalming of bodies as it has properties that are good for the skin.

Visitors to the Stone of the Anointing

Over hundreds of years, there have been stories of miracles and cures experienced by people who have visited and anointed the Stone of the Anointing. The atmosphere in the Church of the Sepulchre is one of reverence and worship. This is clearly one of the holiest places and somewhere that each and every one of us should consider visiting during our lifetimes.

Christianity and resurrection

Christianity and Resurrection

jesus-resurrection
Resurrection – or the promise of life after death – is integral to Christian belief. As such, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ form the central tenet of Christianity. The gospels of the New Testament don’t just describe the resurrection of Jesus after his crucifixion, they also point to at least one resurrection of humanity, often thought to be on the Day of Judgement.

Jesus as the ‘firstfruits’

The term ‘firstfruits’ has been integral in Christian culture as the holy offering of the first fruits of the harvest. The Bible employs this terminology to describe Jesus’ return to life three days after he was laid to rest in the tomb. In Corinthians, it is stated that

“Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep [in death]” [1 Corinthians 15:20].

Therefore, Christians believe resurrection to be God’s harvesting of mankind, the first and most important of which was carried out through Christ’s resurrection.

Subsequent resurrections

The resurrection of Christ is just the first part of God’s plan. In John, we are told Jesus said,

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live” [John 11:25-26].

The emphasis is on God’s intention for humanity’s salvation which too will feature a resurrection since “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life” [John 3:16].

However, the Bible also suggests that resurrection does not point to the full assumption of a physical life after death. Instead, Corinthians explains “It is sown a natural [physical] body, it is raised a spiritual body” [1 Corinthians 15:44].

The resurrection of humanity

However, The resurrection of humanity cannot take place until what many regard as the Second Coming of Christ. At Judgement Day,

“We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed” [1 Corinthians 15:51-52].

There is also some debate as to whether only true Christians will be resurrected in order to enter the Holy Kingdom, or whether both the just and the unjust will be resurrected to face their judgment.

Bartholomew the Apostle from the Sea of Galilee

Bartholomew the Apostle from the Sea of Galilee

The Holy Apostle Bartholomew was born in Cana of Galilee and was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ.

Bartholomew the Apostle most known as related to the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost. After that day, he and the holy Apostle Philip started to preach the Gospel in Syria and Asia Minor. While they were spreading the gospel, they wandered through various cities, and then met up again.

In Mathew 10:2 it is written:

“These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him”.

Feast days

According to the Synaxarium of the Coptic Orthodox Church, his martyrdom is usually commemorated on the first day of the Coptic Calendar. This is the first day of the month of Thout, which is currently September 11, also corresponding to August 29 in the Julian Calendar. His feast is usually June 11 in Eastern Christianity and August 24 in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod, Anglican Communion and both forms of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church.

Ascension

He also witnessed the Ascension, according to the Acts 1:13, which says that “When they arrived, they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew; Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew; James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James”.

Preaching the nations

In each occasion he is named, he is in the company of Philip. After the Ascension, Bartholomew went on a missionary tour to India, where he also left behind a copy of the Gospel of Matthew. After India, he went to the Greater Armenia.

Where will the resurrection happen?

Where will the resurrection happen?

resurrection

It Started in Jerusalem

Jesus’ resurrection took place in Jerusalem and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre is believed by Christians to be the site which contains both the site of Christ’s crucifixion at Calvary and the tomb in which he was buried and resurrected. It is located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem.

Will God’s calling will be heard from anywhere?

For most Christians, there will be no set location for the resurrection and merely being buried in the consecrated ground will mark one out for ascension. Upon the Second Coming, the Bible states

“For the hour is coming in which all who are in their graves will hear His voice and come forth” (John 5:25)

This implies the resurrection will take place across the world. However, Jerusalem continues to be a strong place of pilgrimage for those of the Christian faith to this day. While many are content to visit Jerusalem, others may desire to be buried here in the Christian quarter in the belief that they are closer to the resting place of Christ.

Reconnect With Nature And Spiritual Opportunity

Reconnect with nature and spiritual opportunity

Nature is God’s Creation

Nature is peaceful, and it gives you an opportunity to reconnect with your inner self. But how does this relate to Christianity? Well, being one of God’s creations, nature is simply one of the many ways to experience the spiritual bond we have with Him. However, this spirituality requires to be constantly replenished, and

it can be done through offering prayers to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Creation is Salvation

Our Salvation comes from Him for He died on the Cross to save us from our sins. The son of God came reincarnated and lived among us. Born into a family like any other, making it easier for us to connect with him. He further died for our sins, freeing each one of us from bondage. Therefore, each time we run to the son, we are saved, forgiven of all sins.

Holy Land is a connection to God

To get that renewal of your salvation, a trip to the Holy Land can be quite useful. The Holy Land is a segment found in the Middle East, a sacred place where pilgrims travel to pray and get that spiritual nourishment. There are also plenty of scenic wonders of nature that you get to explore, while at it.

Pray as a connection to God

Prayer is significant in your daily life as a Christian. Prayer strengthens your faith. It is in talking to Jesus that you can show you adore Him, confess all your transgressions, pray for others, family and friends, and thank Him for all the graces in your life.

We, The Salvation Garden, offer you the chance to send your urgent prayer requests for any reason. Allow us to pray for you! Send your Urgent Prayer Requests now.
