In 300 AD, the location of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre was identified as Golgotha. However, many years later, a new discovery uncovered another tomb that left many people wondering. 

The Garden Tomb is a rock-cut tomb that was unearthed in 1867. The site has many similarities to the scenes depicted in the Bible. While some archaeologists say it is not from the same time period, it is widely accepted as the possible burial site of Jesus Christ. 

Regardless of history, the Garden Tomb is a peaceful place of worship. Everyone can agree that it preserves a more traditional perception of what Calgary would have looked like.

Architecture alteration and time have changed the tomb at the crowded Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Because of that, many prefer the Garden Tomb for the feeling of being truly immersed into the events described in the Gospels.

Today, St. Peter’s Church is an easy one hour drive from Jerusalem. But hundreds of years ago, it would take pilgrims another three days to reach the Holy City. The church was built in 1654 on the top of a hill near the shore in Jaffa. 

Jaffa was once the main port to the Holy Land. Christian pilgrims, from across the world, would first arrive here to reach Jerusalem. St. Peter’s Church, with its tall bell tower, used to be a beacon to these pilgrims. It was the hopeful signal that the Holy Land was near. 

The church was originally part of a crusader fort and citadel. It was erected during the reign of Louis IX, King of France. A statue of King Louis IX stands in the courtyard of the church today.

On the right of the church, two rooms still remain of St. Louis’ fort. Historians believe these are the same rooms where French General Napoleon lived in 1799. Napoleon used the Holy Land as a base, while campaigning in Egypt and Syria.

During the 18th century, the church was destroyed and rebuilt twice. The St. Peter’s Church we know today was completed in 1894. Throughout the many lifetimes of this church, it has always been dedicated to St. Peter.

Jaffa is an important location for St. Peter in the bible. Here he raised Tabitha, one of Jesus’ disciples, from the dead.

“Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called for the believers, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive.” Acts 9:40-41

Today, St. Peter’s Church continues to welcome pilgrims from all over the world. There are weekly services in English, Spanish, Polish and even Hebrew.

Church of All Nations

The Church of All Nations sits at the base of the Mount of Olives. Right next to the church are eight ancient olive trees, growing old in the Garden of Gethsemane. One of the trees is over 2,000 years old. Local Christians believe it gave Christ shelter as He prayed the night before His crucifixion.

“And in His Anguish, He prayed more earnestly, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.” Luke 22:44

This holy site used to be called the Church of Agony. In the center of the church is the rock where Jesus stopped to pray, before He was arrested by Roman soldiers. Because of that, the original name of the church comes from the bible and His prayers of agony.

The current structure is built on top of the foundations of two earlier churches. The first, a 4th century basilica was destroyed in an earthquake in 746 AD. After that, crusaders built a church in the 12th century, but it was abandoned in 1345 AD.

The Church of All Nations was completed June 24th, 1924. During the renovations, a Greek inscription was found on the floor that reads, “for the memory and repose of the lovers of Christ… accept the offering of your servants and give them remission of sins”.

Money for the construction was donated from twelve different countries from around the globe. Of course, this is why we call it the Church of All Nations today.

Protestants, Evangelicals, Lutherans, Armenian Apostolic, Eastern Orthodox and more all worship in this church.

This church and monastery are some of the many spiritual sites in Jerusalem. Christian prayers have been heard from this church, for hundreds of years. 

The sacred building is outside the walls of Jerusalem’s old city, next to Zion gate. Even if you are physically far from Jerusalem, you can still make a special prayer request from Dormition Abbey.

Both today and in the past, the church has been an icon of the Jerusalem skyline. Dormition Abbey was even featured on a mosaic of the Holy City made in the 6th century AD. 

The church was first built by the Bishop of Jerusalem, John II, in the 5th century AD. But the building we pray from today is not the same one. The church was destroyed and rebuilt, more than once. 

It is a story of hope. The ancient Christians of Jerusalem did not lose faith. Because of their conviction to God, we can still pray together in Dormition Abbey.

Today, the church in Jerusalem was commissioned by the German Kaiser, Wilhelm II. Ottoman rulers gave the Kaiser a plot of land on Mount Zion when he visited the Holy Land in 1898 AD. It took twelve years to build.

The name of the church has always remained the same, although sometimes translated into different languages. It was built near the site of Jesus’s last supper and where the Blessed Virgin Mary died. 

The name dormition means “falling asleep”. Until today, the church is honored with commemorating where Mary “fell asleep” and where her body and soul were taken to heaven.

At some point in the past, you might have shared images or wallpapers to mark and spread the importance of Ash Wednesday. It is one of the most significant and popular holy days in the liturgical calendar. But if you’ve ever wondered about the origins, historical significance, and other trivia around this special day of fasting, prayer, and abstinence, read on to know more about how it all began.

Origins of Lent

Ash Wednesday is observed to mark the onset of the season of Lent, the 40-day period of fasting and self-restraint leading up to Easter Sunday. The day is also known as the “Day of Ashes” because the devout have their foreheads marked with ash drawn in the form of the Cross. The name Day of Ashes has been derived from “Dies Cinerum” found in the Roman Missal; although the exact roots of the day cannot be found, it can be traced back to the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary. It is widely believed that its observance was followed by the Roman Catholics starting in the 6th century; marking the forehead with ashes on Ash Wednesday is likely to have originated during the papacy of Gregory the Great. During the Council of Nicea, Catholics started the tradition of observing Lent in about 325 CE. Although Ash Wednesday is probably most closely associated with Catholics, its significance is recognized by many Christian denominations and sects, including some Baptists, Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Methodists, Anglicans, Lutherans, and the Western Orthodox Churches.

The Evolution of Lenten Lore

According to the Old Testament, ashes were used both as a sign of mortality and humility. In other words, it is seen as a sign of sorrow as well as a symbol of repentance for sins. The Old Testament’s biblical custom also supports the Christian connotation for ashes in the liturgy of Ash Wednesday. In the 10th century, members and followers of the Anglo-Saxon church received ashes on their forehead as a sign of sorrow for their sins and a reminder of mortality. In 1901, the custom was accepted universally throughout the Western church at the Synod of Benevento.

Initially, the ashes were used to signify penance as a matter of one’s private devotion. Subsequently, it gained prominence as a part of the official ritual for repentance in public. The ashes became a motive for fellow Christians to embrace those who had sinned, look at them with sympathy, and pray for their return to the fold. This ritual evolved with the passage of time and the ashes emerged into its present custom of marking the start of the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday. It is also associated with the adoption of the way of “Righteousness” as explained in the Book of Revelation.

Duration of Lent — Then & Now

The roots of the word Lent are embedded in the Middle English word “Lente”; it denotes “springtime”. The season of Lent is observed for a duration of 40 weekdays beginning from Ash Wednesday. It ends on Good Thursday and is observed as a period of fasting and repentance by the Roman Catholics, Eastern churches, and some Protestant churches as well. Sundays are not excluded from the 40-day count of the season. Hence, technically, the season of Lent lasts for 46 days. Initially, the duration of Lent was only for 36 days; subsequently, it was extended to the present duration of 40 days.

Why 40 Days?

An interesting question may come to mind as to why the duration for observing the season of Lent lasts for 40 days. The reason behind it is that the number 40 holds significance for Christians. Christ spent that many days and nights in the desert, during which he was tempted several times to sin against God. Noah witnessed 40 days of rain until the highest mountain was covered in water. The time between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension was 40 days.

Fasting During Lent

Other than staying away from feasting and merriment, fasting is one of the fundamental principles of Lent. According to the Catholic tradition, believers and followers should not consume meat during Lent. However, nowadays, this rule has been simplified and prohibits followers from eating meat only on Fridays. Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 should fast every Wednesday after Ash Wednesday, although one can eat a single regular-sized meal along with two small meals. Elderly people, small children and those who are sick or suffering from an ailment are exempt from keeping a fast.

How Do You Calculate the Date?

The date on which Easter is celebrated each year depends on the full moon of Passover or Paschal. It has been observed that Easter occurs on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25. One can use mathematical formulas to calculate when Easter will fall on any given year. Once the date for Easter is known, one can easily calculate the date when Lent begins. One simply needs to count 46 days (including Sundays) or 40 days (excluding Sundays) from Easter to determine the date of Ash Wednesday.

Looking for new love? It is worth praying for it

When you look around your social circle, does it strike you that most of your siblings, cousins, and friends have found the person of their dreams and have settled down to happy matrimony? To your utter amazement, even the ones who were left behind or had sworn to stay away from the bond of marriage have found their ideal partners or soulmates and will soon be ensconced in their love nests. On the other hand, you are picking up the broken pieces of your love life and trying to act normal. As you get on with your life, you realize the emptiness in your world. You yearn for companionship but, at the same time, feel wary of making the same mistake twice. You begin to blame yourself for everything that goes wrong in your life and begin to question yourself for even inane things happening around you. You realize in your heart of hearts that only Divine Grace can help you tide over your past and begin life anew; yet, when you start praying, your soul seems to be restless. If you can identify your predicament but do not know who to turn to, consider sending a prayer request to soothe your restive heart and soul.

THE DAY MY LIFE ENDED (OR SO I THOUGHT)

I had always believed in fairy tale romances and “happily ever after” endings, but when I went through a painful period of heartbreak my world fell apart. Life seemed to drag and I began to lose interest in things and activities I used to enjoy. I became a recluse and would get irritated at the slightest provocation. I prayed to God but, at times, words failed me and tears rolled down my cheeks. In my despair, I thought even the Almighty had forsaken me.

My best friend suggested that I send a prayer request to find hope and a motive in life. Although I had heard accounts of others and their success stories, I was skeptical as to whether it would work for me. Moreover, I was physically as well as mentally too tired to undertake any journey to seek solace. Soon, my parents introduced me to a family friend whom I had not met before. At first, my past came back to haunt me and I thought that I was heading for another disastrous relationship. It was at these times that I would think of the path that the Lord had chosen for me. Slowly I realized that I had met the right person and could foresee a happy future awaiting me. Although I was undertaking a new journey I knew that the Almighty was always with me. He showered his blessings on me and gave me a ray of hope when I thought that everything in my life had come to a standstill. I realized that the path chosen for me was God’s will and I decided to cast aside my apprehensions and travel down the road before me.

There are times when our belief in the Almighty becomes a little shaky and we do not know what to do or which road to take. The Golgotha or “the place of the skull” is believed to be the site of Christ’s crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Further excavations have revealed religious markings (signs of Christian Burials) dating back to the days of Christ. Two painted crosses were found inside the tomb with Byzantine markings dating back to the 5th or 6th centuries; the crosses were accompanied by Greek letters which referred to Christ as the Alpha and Omega. Hence the Church of All Nations is also known as the Basilica of the Agony. The tympanum is decorated with a modern mosaic; it represents the bond between Christ and Mankind. The lunette in the apse features a mosaic depicting Christ in agony being comforted by an Angel. The side apses have mosaic representations of incidents of Christ’s Passion like the Arrest of Jesus and the Kiss of Judas. Abbey of the Dormition

This German Byzantine monastic church is situated on top of Mount Zion. It is said to be the site of the Virgin Mary’s “dormition” or“falling asleep” and ascension to heaven. Above the main altar, the apse features a golden Byzantine-style mosaic portraying the Madonna and Child from 1939. The crypt contains an ivory sculpture of the resting Virgin Mary. This church faces the West, as opposed to most other churches, which face East. The site where the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter is situated has been revered as a Christian center for more than a thousand years. A church and an inn for pilgrims were constructed here in the 16th century, probably on the ruins of another church. The construction of the present church was finished in 1894. There is a wooden pulpit inside the church carved in the form of a fruiting tree. The arms of Christ and Francis are crossed over the Tau Cross. Below the Franciscan Cross is the cross of the Holy Land, a Greek cross in red with a white background and four similar crosses, one in each quadrant; it is also known as the “Jerusalem Cross”. In Aramaic, Peter’s name is referred to as Cepha, the word for “rock”; legend goes that Christ had told St. Peter at Banias that he is the “rock” upon which his church would be built. It is situated within the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem and contains the two holiest sites in Christianity, the site where Christ of Nazareth was crucified (known as Calvary in Latin and Golgotha in Greek), and Christ’s empty tomb, where he is believed to have been buried and resurrected. According to a historian of Christianity and exegete, Eusebius of Caesarea (also known as Eusebius Pamphili), the Roman emperor Hadrian built a temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite in the 2nd century AD to bury the cave in which Christ had been buried. Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor, built the church in 325 AD; Helena, Constantine’s mother, rediscovered the “True Cross” during the building of the church. According to popular belief, the Stone of Anointing, just inside the entrance to the church, is the spot where Christ’s body was prepared for burial by Joseph of Arimathea. Abbey of the Dormition

This ancient monastic church, located atop Mount Zion, has a distinctive blue conical roof, rich interiors, four ornamented turrets, and a clock tower. This German Benedictine church commemorates the “falling asleep” (dormition) of the Virgin Mary; it was built by Cologne Archdiocesan architect Heinrich Renard. The church was constructed on land given by the Turkish sultan to the German Kaiser Wilhelm II to mark the Kaiser’s visit to Jerusalem in 1898. In 1910, the church was dedicated by the German Benedictines. There are two levels: the main church and the crypt; the lower-level crypt is believed to be the traditional site of the Virgin Mary’s home and death. There is a circular pillared hall with ambulatories that centers on the Chapel of the Dormition; there is a carved stone figure of the Virgin Mary in repose (dormition) and above it, there is a mosaic in the dome that depicts Christ receiving her soul. The Prayer That Saved My Life

PRAYER FOR HEALING

We have read various accounts of Christ’s miracles and how His healing touch cured the devout. But how many of us have experienced these miraculous happenings in our lives? In today’s age of nuclear medicine and the latest advances in surgery and methods of treatment, should we turn to the Supreme Power or simply believe in the advancement of science? Such thoughts cloud our mind time and again. And I was no exception. I had heard about how people who are unable to visit holy places send a prayer request for the sick to a place of their choice or send a prayer request to Israel, but I didn’t give it much thought till a life-altering ailment shattered my very existence.

I had lost my mother a month ago and was trying to come to terms with my loss. I had stopped going out with my friends and refused to be a part of any social or family gatherings; I hated the look of sympathy in people’s eyes. Their words of comfort made me more miserable and wallow in self-pity. I would feel restless and wanted to spend time alone. I had forgotten to live, I merely existed.

One day, I noticed a small lump on my breast. I didn’t think much about it and chose to ignore it. Within a short span of time, I noticed that more lumps had developed. I confided in my maternal aunt, who told me to consult my family physician immediately. I was referred to an oncologist who asked me to undergo tests. My worst fears came true when the test results confirmed that I had breast carcinoma. I had always been a Believer and faithful follower of the Lord, but the first question that came to my mind was: “Why me, God?” I was only 26 years old and had always led a disciplined life. Then how could this happen to me of all people? Neither of my parents had a family history of carcinoma. No one in my family had ever succumbed to the dreadful disease. I kept asking God: “How could I, of all people, be diagnosed with cancer?” Why were mishaps occurring in my life in quick succession?

Although the Scripture advises us to pray, all I wanted to do was cry out to God in despair; but words failed me as I tried to pray. My aunt, who had been a pillar of strength, suggested that I consider sending a prayer request to Israel. This gave rise to more questions in my mind. Does God heal everyone? Why are some people bereft of His healing touch? Will my prayers be answered? Will I be able to receive His healing balm? Although I had been diagnosed with carcinoma, my oncologist had advised further tests to confirm and diagnose the stage of cancer and prepare a plan of treatment. My aunt told me of a few acquaintances who had sent a prayer for the sick and received His blessings. As it was not possible for me to undertake a pilgrimage to the Holy Land due to my health, as well as expenses involved, I decided to give it a thought. With a lot of trepidation in my heart, I surfed the Internet to choose a church and send a prayer request to Israel. I decided to surrender myself to the Lord and trust Him completely to deliver me from my state of hopelessness.

I had never felt so helpless in my life until this juncture, but I had nothing to lose as I turned to the Eternal Power. A few days later, I received a confirmation of acceptance of my prayer request to Israel at the church that I had chosen. I received a video of my prayer request for the sick and felt a glimmer of hope in my body, mind, and spirit. My test results confirmed that, although I had been diagnosed with breast carcinoma, it was in the early stages. As I heaved a sigh of relief, a sense of gratitude filled my mind and heart. I still needed surgery and several weeks of radiotherapy, but I was renewed with the courage to fight and win my battle against the disease.

Many times we face such a predicament in life or see our near and dear ones suffering physically and mentally. Sending a prayer request for the sick can deliver us from our pain or mend our broken heart. Physicians and medicines can provide relief to our bodily ailments, but we need to turn to the Supreme Power for inner healing. We reach out to family and friends in their times of crisis, but we don’t know who to really turn to in our hour of need. Saint Helena, Constantine’s mother, discovered the relic of the “True Cross” of Christ’s Crucifixion in 326 C.E. In 1898, German emperor Wilhelm II built the church on a piece of land received from the Ottoman sultan during his visit to the Holy Land. In 1910, the church was inaugurated and stands out as a major landmark with its round shape, lead-covered conical roof, four turrets, and bell tower.
